Don’t use FTP ?

The article in the following link describes why we really shouldn’t be using FTP in this day and age. A good read, he has valid points but FTP isn’t generally used for secure stuff (ha! Well most people try not to).

Furthermore The support for SFTP just isn’t there out of the box yet - Joe Blow wants to setup a SFTP server - his options:

- install openSSH (please lock down accounts etc. etc.),
- install filezilla (etc.) and generate a self signed SSL cert.

A bunch of fun and so easy to move to. Not. (Yes easy for someone who breathes IT but getting the time to move stuff over when people use IIS’s built in FTP for shared hosting is time consuming)

Its a case that MS and other providers need to make the implementation of it easier.

Exchange 2003 - Out of office not turned on for external by default

To enable out-of-office reply messages to the Internet, follow these steps:
1.      Start Exchange System Manager.
2.      Double-click Global Settings, and then click Internet Message Formats.
3.      In the details pane, right-click a domain name, and then click Properties.

Note By default, “*” is the SMTP domain.
4.      In the Default Properties dialog box, click Advanced, and then click to select the Allow out of office responses check box.

This allows out-of-office reply messages to be sent under this SMTP policy.

Tomato Firmware

I decided to update my Linksys firmware (running the WRT54GS v3) for the first time in about a year since it appeared Hyper Tofu Tibor wasn’t being updated anymore I weighed my options.

1. DD-WRT
2. Tomato - http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato
3. OpenWRT

Moving to DD-WRT was seamless but response on the GUI was terrible - QoS didn’t seem to work very well - Bittorrent traffic made everything slow.

So on to my next choice - Tomato - firmware upgrade seamless - Just needed to get the DD-WRT password from telnet as DD-WRT changed how it stored its password.

Tomato’s GUI was quick, easy on the eyes (Which is a big plus in my book.). and didn’t have any of the problems DD-WRT had.

The layout of the menus were nice - a bit different if you are used to DD-WRT etc. but once you get the hang of it, its all good - as it uses AJAX things just appear to load in a snap.

I haven’t had a chance to play with any advance features yet but I’m running as I was with my Hyper Tofu Tibor firmware - Nicely.

Thoughts - Glad I took the time to test DD-WRT as its so popular (so I can see what all the fuss is about) but it wasn’t for me and my current router.
